Magali Wilensky

Magali Wilensky is an award-winning New York-based textile artist, healer, teacher and mother of two. Her work is now owned by a number of galleries and private collectors including The Yuko Nii Foundation from Wah Center (Williamsburg Art & Historic Center).

Magali moved from Argentina to Miami, Florida where she received a Bachelors in Fine Arts from The Art Institute of Miami 2006. There she developed her rolled fabric technique which she exhibited in selected group and solo shows in galleries and other institutions in New York, Miami, and Buenos Aires.

In 2008 her art took her into an inward journey, with a deeper study of the body, mind and soul. She became a massage therapist, sound healer, yoga teacher and meditation instructor, using art to bring more awareness to the self and the oneness of all.

She and her family founded and own a Wellness Center called Om’echaye in Miami, Florida.

Magali moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2013, where she studied and graduated from Brooklyn College with a Masters in Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA). She and her team created an interactive durational performance to encourage audiences to explore a collective altered state of consciousness through installation.

Artist statement:

My artistic focus centers on fabric manipulation, employing techniques like cutting, rolling, folding, sewing, and gluing to create large-scale art installations, as well as artworks ranging from monumental to miniature. Working with strips of colorful fabric feels akin to painting, allowing me to play with hues, lines, shapes, textures, and volume, leading to the emergence of exciting new forms. Each rolled-up fabric offers a magnified view of the intricate layers of nature such as organs, cells, plants, or other organisms.

Biology and anatomy have profoundly influenced my artistic journey. Delving deep into the exploration of the body’s structure and composition, I am fascinated by the myriad layers that comprise our bodies and nature, marveling at how diverse parts come together to form a functional whole. This curiosity has led me to further study our bodies, alongside practices such as meditation, sound healing, and personal development, enriching my personal discovery and artistic expression.

To integrate the realms of body, emotions, mind, and spirit, I began creating individual immersive fabric chambers, complete with guided meditations and activities accompanied by custom soundscapes. These spaces, designed for relaxation and self-awareness, invite tactile exploration, auditory immersion, and deep contemplation. Through this multisensory experience and my art installations, I aim to foster a profound connection with the boundless layers of consciousness, physicality, and emotions within each individual, with the aspiration that individual awareness may lead to collective enlightenment.

She is far too humble to ever have asked me to share about her work publicly, but I felt called to do so simply because I was so moved.
